We’ve (nearly) seen it all in the realm of picture framing over the last 12+ years. There have been WWII shadowboxes, children’s drawings and everything in between. We love to hear the stories behind what our clients have chosen to custom frame. And because we’ve personally tried to preserve our own family’s history through custom framing, it’s always a pleasure to do it for others. Often the projects are more than family history, they are also a part of American History.
We recently had a client bring in an American Flag she wanted to frame for her husband for Father’s Day. He had been stationed in Afghanistan and returned with the flag. We are no strangers to framing oversize art, but at a size over 5×3 feet, materials are somewhat restricted. The client chose a rustic frame from Larson Juhl to enhance the weathered state of the flag. Traditional mat board caps out at 60″x40″ and you’re sort of left with the choice of white or white, which would have made the flag appear dirty. We ultimately used the oversize white mat and customized it, wrapping it with a 100% cotton duck canvas. The canvas keeps the framing acid free and added a more appropriate color and texture to enhance the flag. To mount the flag and give it the look of floating, we hand stitched it to the custom mat. To finish the project and keep it preserved, we used TruVue Conservation Clear Acrylic Glass and an acrylic spacer to lift it off the flag.
It’s a great honor to have our clients trust us with their family heirlooms and we love that this piece will be treasured by their family for decades to come.
